Choosing the best iPhone 2019 has become more complicated, with new options like this month’s iPhone XR joining the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max. We have classified them all.
Our recommendations include the 10 best iPhones you can buy, because buying the newest ones may not be your best option if you want a cheap iPhone. For example, last year’s iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are still good choices, and you’ll find the iPhone X on sale in some places at a cheap price, even if it’s no longer in the Apple Store.
We’ve reviewed the three new iPhones: the powerful 6.5-inch iPhone XS Max , the 5.8-inch iPhone XS and the new “cheap” XR iPhone , which was launched on October 26.
Good news, the 10 best iPhones we recommend come with iOS 12 , the latest Apple update for your devices. Therefore, it is a little different from our prestigious list of the best phones and the list of the best Android phones . Apple prices vary a lot, but all of them are an investment.
Our list of the best iPhones highlights the different specifications, screen sizes and prices. Each of these phones has something to offer each type of Apple fan – so we’ve narrowed down the options for you in an easy-to-read format.
The 10 best iPhone of 2019:
The biggest (and best) iPhone so far
Weight: 208g | Dimensions: 157.5 x 77.4 x 7.7mm | OS: iOS 12 | Screen size: 6.5 inches | Resolution: 1242 x 2688 | CPU: A12 Bionic | RAM: 4GB | Storage: 64/256 / 512GB | Battery: 3,179mAh | Rear camera: 12MP + 12MP | Front camera: 7MP
The iPhone XS Max is Apple’s biggest and best iPhone – if your hands and your wallet are just as big. It has a large 6.5-inch OLED screen with HDR10 support to make colors stand out. It’s the perfect phone if you want a giant screen.
Behind that large screen there is an enhanced 12 MP dual lens camera. Apple equipped it with Smart HDR and increased the size of the sensor to capture larger pixels. The iPhone XS Max (like the XS) has new depth detection capabilities for the adjustable bokeh effect (background blur) during and after a shot.
The TrueDepth camera returns with a faster recognition of Face ID, and its 7MP selection also improves depth control and Smart HDR. And, of course, Animoji returns with the advantage of having Memoji (personalized Animoji) in iOS 12.
The iPhone XS Max is more expensive than the iPhone X and the iPhone XS (which replaces the X), of course. But if you pay for it over the course of two years in a contract (or through the Apple Updates Program), the cost is not significantly higher month by month.
Pros / Cons:
- Magnificent large screen for games and movies
- The camera is powerful for an iPhone
- Price overwhelming: it is the most expensive iPhone in history
- The size can make it difficult to manage
2. iPhone XS
The iPhone you were waiting for
Weight: 174g | Dimensions: 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7 mm | OS: iOS 12 | Screen size: 5.8 inches | Resolution: 1125 x 2436 | CPU: A12 Bionic | RAM: 4GB | Storage: 64/256 / 512GB | Battery: 2,659mAh | Rear camera: 12MP + 12MP | Front camera: 7MP
Believe it or not, the iPhone XS is Apple’s ‘smallest’ phone. It has a 5.8-inch screen, making it easier to use with just one hand than the iPhone XS Max, but it’s still a large update for some people.
It’s an update to last year’s iPhone X, our previous recommendation for the best iPhone, although you’ll have to look closely to appreciate the changes: the design is no different at all. It has a 12MP Smart HDR camera, an enhanced TrueDepth front camera and a fast Bionic A12 chipset, just like the larger iPhone XS Max.
In fact, this full-screen phone is pretty much the iPhone XS Max in the smallest form factor of last year. It has a smaller battery than the Max and obviously a smaller screen, but you can still capture the same great photos and videos on this device and play the same games. There is no difference there.
Pros / Cons:
- The inclusion of Smart HDR helps the camera
- Faster operation on one hand compared to the XS Max
- The life of the battery is not the best in the world
- It’s still very expensive
3. iPhone XR
The new and cheaper iPhone with great battery life
Weight: 194g | Dimensions: 150.9 x 75.7 x 8.3 mm | OS: iOS 12 | Screen size: 6.1 inches | Resolution: 1792 x 828 | CPU: A12 Bionic | RAM: 4GB | Storage: 64 / 128256GB | Battery: 2,942mAh | Rear camera: 12MP + 12MP | Front camera: 7MP
The iPhone XR is a great update for the average consumer who does not want to pay for the iPhone more expensive than money (a lot of money) can buy. This is Apple’s cheap iPhone for 2018, at least when it comes to newly launched phones.
It also stands out with a variety of iPhone XR colors: Blue, White, Black, Yellow, Coral, Red. This contrasts sharply with the rather dull colors of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. However, it shares the same internal specifications: Apple’s fast Bionic A12 chipset and a 12MP camera with a single lens on the back. You do not get the double-lens camera as in a higher-level iPhone, so you miss the telephoto shots. But the Smart HDR is the real advantage when it comes to taking good pictures, and that is included here.
It’s cheaper, more colorful and has a large 6.1-inch screen. This is enough for most people, especially for those who do not need an impressive OLED screen.
Pros / Cons:
- Great battery life for an iPhone
- Lower price and fun colors
- Some applications are not yet fully optimized
- Low resolution screen
4. iPhone X
The best iPhone of 2017
Weight: 174g | Dimensions: 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7mm | OS: iOS 11 | Screen size: 5.8 inches | Resolution: 1125 x 2436 | CPU: A11 Bionic | RAM: 3GB | Storage: 64 / 256GB | Battery: 2,716mAh | Rear camera: 12MP + 12MP | Front camera: 7MP
The iPhone X is as impressive as it is expensive, but if you really want the best iPhone today and do not want to wait for the iPhone XI, this is the one to get today. Millions of Apple fans have already done so since its launch months ago. It is the future of Apple’s smartphone.
It has a large panel that occupies the entire screen, except for a notch on the top that houses a new TrueDepth camera. This takes the selfies to another level and can also map your face and turn it into an exclusive Animoji for the iPhone X. If you do not know what that is at this point, you probably do not mind.
The iPhone X is the smartphone of Apple’s tenth anniversary and has almost everything that iPhone users have been asking for, from more advanced design to faster specifications and new features. However, you will also have to get used to the Face ID instead of looking for the non-existent fingerprint sensor.
Pros / Cons:
- Bright screen
- Powerful specifications
- TrueDepth smart camera
- Incredibly expensive
The best ‘normal’ iPhone available at this moment
Weight: 202g | Dimensions: 158.4 x 78.1 x 7.5 mm | OS: iOS 11 | Screen size: 5.5 inches | Resolution: 1080 x 1920 | CPU: A11 Bionic | RAM: 3GB | Storage: 64 / 256GB | Battery: 2,691mAh | Rear camera: 12MP + 12MP | Front camera: 7MP
The iPhone 8 Plus is the best iPhone if you are not willing to make the leap to the future of smartphones proposed by Apple and need the Touch ID fingerprint sensor. It remains popular due to its screen size, cheaper price and physical home button.
However, it has several key features that you will like. It is one of the first iPhones to have wireless charging and fast charging, and the camera has improved. Its dual-lens camera does not have optical image stabilization in the telephoto (a feature saved for the iPhone X), but it’s still a great way to take photos at great distances.
It will not draw much attention with its bevelled design, but the iPhone 8 Plus is an iPhone built for large hands and slightly lower price than the iPhone X.
Pros / Cons:
- Wireless charging
- a higher battery time
- Outdated design
6. iPhone 8
The new 4.7-inch iPhone is a phone that many people still want
Weight: 148g | Dimensions: 138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3mm | OS: iOS 11 | Screen size: 4.7 inches | Resolution: 750 x 1334 | CPU: A11 Bionic | RAM: 2GB | Storage: 64 / 256GB | Battery: 1,821mAh | Rear camera: 12MP | Front camera: 7MP
This is actually Apple’s best-selling iPhone, and for several good reasons. First of all, we understand, you refuse to change the size of the 4.7-inch iPhone screen and, frankly, we do not blame you. Every time we return to this iPhone with ‘normal’ dimensions, we feel as if we have just gone on vacation with a smartphone. Second, its price is much more reasonable than the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus for many people.
However, the fact that the size is the same as that of the iPhones of yesteryear does not mean that the technology behind it is. The iPhone 8 has the same Bionic A11 chipset as the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X, and also debuted with wireless charging and fast charging on an Apple smartphone.
The camera is still fantastic, even if it does not have dual lens functions that are unique to the iPhone X and Plus, and you’ll love iOS 11 at this size more than the even smaller iPhone SE.
Pros / Cons:
- Wireless charging is useful
- The camera is ideal for aiming and shooting
- Limited update on the iPhone 7
- Design with antiquated bezel
